Maybe you might have experienced this recently, A perfectly normal person with their newspaper, laptop, iphone, kindle,or Ipad reading early in the morning and eating and drinking their breakfast while talking to themselves. They will be saying two for four ,one k, 2 ribbies and one steal,or five k's and two walks over seven innings. Someone else will sit next to them and they both will start talking in a language that would seem foreign to you. The second person will say, what is Pujols batting average, or how many did they get in the seventh ,or it was a rain delay, or what's Hamel's ERA.
These people are talking boxscores and they are published the day after every Major League Baseball Game game or online immediately after the games . High schools ,colleges ,important Little League games , AAU contest of Significance in Baseball and Softball all publish Box Scores. If you can learn how to read a box score ,its the first step towards understanding the nuances of the game , and a lifelong passion. A good way to learn is start scoring games with your kids for fun, is to go out , and buy some scorecards , or look one up online and print it or make your own. Some people do this passionately. I have one friend who has scored every Red Sox game since the early 80's. Its fun ,its inexpensive and its great family time. After a few games of scoring you will start to understand the importance of statistics to the Game of Baseball , and if you have the Love of the Game in you will lead to a lifelong Passion. Have Fun!!!
